Acting Staff Sergeant Dave Smoke Seconded to the Ontario Police College
Dave Smoke is the Acting Staff Sergeant (A/S/Sgt) with the Six Nations Police Service (SNPS). A/S/Sgt Smoke has been the SNPS since 1992 and has served as a Patrol Constable, Community Services Officer, Detective Constable, Patrol Sergeant, Media Relations Officer, and A/S/Sgt in charge of Operations. Since January 2016, A/S/Sgt Smoke has been seconded to the Ontario Police College (OPC) as an instructor for the Ontario Basic Constable Recruit Program. He is currently assigned to the Police Vehicle Operations (PVO) team at OPC. As a PVO Instructor, A/S/Sgt Smoke trains Police Recruits from every Police Service in Ontario in theoretical, lecture, and practical sessions, with regard to Police Vehicle Operations. These sessions include skid control, ABS control, Police cooperative driving, patrol and destination driving, mapping, emergency response driving, suspect apprehension pursuits, alternatives to pursuits, and pursuit termination methods. As well as his PVO training, A/S/Sgt Smoke has also assisted OPC with other areas of Recruit Training, having taken part in the Diversity and Professional Practices sessions which provide information to the Police Recruits about Native Awareness, Residential School impacts on First Nations People, and the structure and uniqueness around First Nations Policing in Ontario, A/S/Sgt Smoke has also served as a Liason Officer for the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service Recruits at OPC. The Six Nations Police look forward to welcoming A/S/Sgt Smoke back when his Secondment ends at the end of December 2017. While A/S/Sgt Smoke is carrying out his secondment, a senior uniform member of the Six Nations Police Service will be responsible for the duties of this position.
